Not very much of his life, then. Nathan nods at the posters behind Kotetsu, his face stiff with thoughtfulness. "What do you think about this Hero business? We don't have anything like it where I'm from."

Wooooah boy. Kotetsu let his shoulders slump back, casual, yeah, real casual, as he glanced over and grinned a little. His eyes were bright. There was no way he didn't look a little excited, just like a kid, when he talked about it. "I think it's pretty great! You've got all these guys following in Mr. Legend's footsteps, trying to do the right thing and save people when no one else can. Protecting civilians, arresting the bad guy.... bam!" He smacked one hand into the other, the sound of a closing cell door. "And the best part is inspiring other people to do the right thing too. NEXT powers are for helping people; that's the most important part. And people who don't... well, who else can handle it?"

"Oh yes, I agree," he responds, nodding quickly. It's a truly wonderful calling." A brief excitement not unlike Kotetsu's that had sprung up momentarily, drops just as quickly back to his brooding thoughtfulness. "But this sponsor business...why limit those who can help others?" He treats it as merely an intellectual question, a discussion to get his mind off his rejection.

"Uh," and Kotetsu leaned back, running his eyes to the ceiling. It was a good question. He scratched at the edge of his jaw while the cars rattled on, his own face with a Good Job! thumb in front of him.
"Well.... You gotta be certified by the law, first, and they don't just let anyone do that. And you kinda need someone to get your back, right, because everything can get a little expensive, but I never got it much either. But a Hero needs to make a living, right? Its a pretty good living, helping people."
He frowned, sinking back. "But if you just want to help, nothing says that you can't. You can be a Hero without all the bells an' whistles, nothing says you can't get certified and just do it yourself."

His eyes push together and his head tips to the side in confusion. "You can get certified on your own...?"

"We-e-ll." Kotetsu glances to the side, head titled back as he thought about the possibility. "I don't see why you can't. The people who vet you aren't the companies, its the Judicial board, right? Just makes it easier if you've got a sponsor, but if you have the money and the time. I ain't never heard of it, but Mr. Legend came from no where, didn't he? All the early Heroes did."

...He hadn't thought of that. The very idea that he hadn't thought of that makes him pause almost as much as the idea itself. "So with enough money and resources, anyone can be a Hero, hm?" Any NEXT, at least, considering what Sternbild's Heroes have to go through.
Nathan's fingers curl in front of his mouth, considering. Maybe too long. It takes him a while to remember to keep the discussion on a purely intellectual level. "It's interesting, isn't it? In many other cities there's grumbling about the richer citizens oppressing the poorer. Here, many work to protect them instead." There's a hint of a slowly growing smile. "Sternbild is truly ahead of its time, is it not?"

"I guess so!" Kotetsu eyed up this guy, a brow lifted. Kinda a weird question to ask. He'd never even though about it! But the guy seemed to like the idea of heroes, so he couldn't be that bad. He actually kinda liked him. The guy didn't seem to really care about the same stuff most stuffy suits did, at least, and wasn't bad to talk to.
He set his hands on his hips, head back and grinning. "It's kinda amazing if you think about it. All the sponsor stuff, that's not even the real job," he dismissively waved his hand at the thought. "Its on the ground that matters."

"Isn't it!" Nathan leans back, letting his weight catch on the pole he's holding onto. He looks...satisfied. "The sponsors are a good support system, of course, but it's what they support that matters in the end--a safer city, stronger citizens." He smiles at Kotetsu. "I'd never thought of it that way!" The satisfaction on his face, he hopes, looks like that of someone who'd achieved a brief moment of clarity from a stimulating conversation, and not that of one who'd suddenly gotten a very, very good idea.

Kotetsu grins back at him. Look at this guy, he'd been feeling so down before! But Heroes had cheered him right up. Not too shabby, Kaburagi. Pleased with himself, he hooks one foot over the other. "See, now there's the ticket. Even if you didn't get what you want, there's always a way to find your dream." A paused. He scratches at his jaw, dimly recalling... "Hey, what were you applying for anyway?"

Nathan does have a moment of blinking blankly at Kotetsu, a moment of being caught, a moment of not knowing what to say, how to answer.
Later, he'll imagine with great fondness that it was the last such moment he'd ever had.
He grins at Kotetsu, outright grins. "A horrible, awful position!" he exclaims, in a way that reminds Kotetsu point blank that Nathan is younger than him. "The worst!" He has no idea what the Firebird Energy CEO had come up with for him, but he knows now that anything other than his own plans could never be right. "What does it matter, Kotetsu?" he asks, his eyes shining. (And they haven't even gotten to the bar yet!) "It doesn't! You were right." The grin mellows out, but it's still with a smile that he faces the older man. "'When one door closes, another opens,' right? I simply must find that next opening!"

Kotetsu stares at this enthusiastic, young--holy hell, the guy's young, it hits him suddenly, not a lot young but kinda young, enough that he feels a bit of a jab from it--man as he suddenly fills with fire.
Yeah. Fire was the word for it, a sudden burning paired with a brightness behind the eyes. Complete turn around from the morose man who'd leaned against a statue just ten, fifteen minutes ago. There was something devastating about this man grinning--Nath... Nissan? Neesan? Nathan--that suddenly hints at a thousand broken hearts.
So he stared, and then he snorted, and shoved a hand over his mouth as he laughed. "The w-worst? Why did you--ha, ha, man, that's the spirit!" He caught his breath, grinned, a little cocky. It tilts his head, brightens his eye. "A few drinks, and you've got yourself ready already."

"I hope you're a man who can hold his alcohol, Kotetsu," he warns suddenly, both his voice and his amusement deep. He's looking forward to it, suddenly, a chance to unwind, drinks with a handsome man he'd just met (and seems interested! Maybe even a little!). It's way better than drinking to drown his sorrows.

Kotetsu's grin widened and his stance grew cocky as he threw back his head a little, shoulders back, and the sway of his back easy. "Hah, no worries about that. I just hope you can keep up."

"You should find nothing to complain about," he returns, and then reaches out as if to pat Kotetsu's shoulder, but his hand stays there instead.
"Don't get too excited," he teases, quietly. "You might lose your balance again." Nathan winks, as one of the two bearers of this joke.
