He leaned back in his chair again, smile spreading. "Do try to remember now. No one likes a worried Wingleader." T'skyn normally just got mad, but he figured for that old man, it was about the same as worried.

The grin flashes back, and he laughed softly, hair falling back into his face. "No one does. Already had that lecture a few times. I hope that doesn't mean you feel obligated to keep an eye on me on his behalf."

Now there's a good excuse. He should have thought of that himself and the interest in the idea shows on his face. "Well it would be the responsible thing for me to do... if I'm gonna make Wingleader I gotta be responsible."

This time when he lifted his head, his eyes were bright like the smile on his face. The green murmured things into his ear, coiled up on his shoulder. "So far you've been very responsible. Like saving me from drowning. ... I haven't said thank you for that yet."

"Oh I'm sure Coranth would have pulled you out in time, but really. I could let you go drowning when I've only just met you could I?"
He plants a hand over his blue, who seemed to be regaining his interest in the pair across the table. The halting of it's mischief turns to a light stroking shortly though to keep the little guy distracted.
"You do know how to swim though, don't you?"

"I already mentioned Coranth and I practicing. I learned a long time ago." The green was coiled, tail lashing a little as she watched the blue out of the corner of her gleaming eye. D'nel reached up to calm her in much the same fashion as T'rey. "It's just a littler hard to concentrate when you're on fire, ha ha. You have to watch out for whats near the water sometimes in the South, though. How about you?"

"Ha, that's what I thought. Had to make sure though." He chuckled. "Oh I can swim alright, foster mother said I learned fast after I nearly drowned a few times, trying to keep up with my brother."

"Brother?" D'nel perked up, although he shouldn't really be surprised. A lot of the weyrlings ended up with a sibling or half-sibling, or two. "Only the one?"

He dropped his eyes to the table. He's still got a smile but it's gone sad. "Had. I got a half down in Eastern still though, good kid."
His little blue ceases attempts to leave him then to croon against his neck.

D'nel's expression softens, and he leans in on his elbows to make the space between them a bit quieter. It means he has to lift his voice less loudly to be heard in this common space. His green lifts her head to peer at T'rey with sudden curiousity.
"I'm sorry to bring up a sad memory." He pushes back his hair in a careful shove. "Loosing family isn't easy."

"Don't worry about it." His smile is still sad but he brings his eyes up to meet D'nel's. "It's part of the job right? He had a nice big brown, Abith."

D'nel did not flinch away from the sadness. He met T'rey's eyes solidly, narrow brows drawn together as his chin resettled on his hand. "Did you loose him to Thread?"

The sad smile finally gave way to a grimace and eyes fall again to where he's picking at the grain of the wooden table. " Abith took a bad tangle to the neck, they went together."

D'nel's gaze dropped with T'rey's, to the same hand. He thought he remembered the name; Abith, a brown. Perhaps he'd over heard talk about the loss, long enough ago to be lost in the headlong rush of Threadfall. His soft smile was wry, and he reached across the table to lightly touch the back of T'rey's hand. "I'm sorry. One is one too many to loose to Thread."

He sighed, hand ceasing it's fidgeting when D'nel's touched it. " he'd been so jealous when I impressed Orsith, I could see it in his face. Not for long though, didn't matter anymore once he had his Abith. Just as well that we impressed same clutch, he would have tortured me if he'd have to wait for his dragon and I had one..." He stood then, pulling his hand away from D'nel and gathering both their plates to take them to the sinks. "I shouldn't dwell. I'll upset Orsith."
